Combination Tickets to beat SWT 'before 1100' fare increase ?
http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/SWT.../Ticket+types/ _changestofares Before this week's increase a CDR&ODTC (M-F after 0930 One Day Travel Card) from Walton-on-Thames (3 stops outside the zones) to London cost 10.40 GBP. The same validity now costs 11.60 (only 10.00 Super Off Peak, ie after 1100) But SWT say "does not affect travel solely in the London Zonal Fare area", a CDR from Walton-on-Thames to Surbiton (zone 6) is 3.70 and a ODTC (1-6) is 6.70 so the total is (3.70+6.70)= 10.40 as above, saving 1.20 a day. You can buy ODTCs only within the zones but up to 7 days in advance so you don't necessarily have to get off at Surbiton on the day to buy even if you want a Railcard-discounted Travelcard. Any problems with this ? Other ideas ? -- Mike D |

I've bought in-boundary ODTCs from ticket offices outside the zones many times before. The ODTC is between London Terminals & Zones R1256. -- Michael Hoffman |

Any problems with this ? Other ideas ? SWT say on their FAQs they have arranged the fares so that combining tickets doesn't give any benefit - perhaps they have only ensured this for combining their own tickets, as they don't set the ODTC... By the way, its interesting that you refer to the 'before 1100' increase. At my local station, Fareham, the 1020 via Basingstoke is the first train that I can get with a normal CDR - it is only 15 mins later than 1005, the first train on which I could previously use my Network Card due to the after 1000 rule. As an occasional traveller to London a Network card is de rigeur - therefore its not a huge change... Also - the NR OJP Fare Checker cannot deal with the super off peak fares yet. I've reported it to NR, and they have replied implying its all too complicated, as it requires different rules for every SWT station... Paul |

Can you really only buy ODTCs within the zones? Surely every NR ticket is available from every station, with Avantix and all...? Any problems with this ? No, assuming all Walton-on-Thames trains stop at Surbiton, which IIRC they do. -- John Band john at johnband dot org www.johnband.org |

The new SWT leaflet says "on trains leaving after 11am or in the case of stations further away from London, on trains arriving in London after 12 noon" This is exactly the same as the CDR wording except that that uses "9:30" and "10:00 or after" so there should be no difficulty in doing the one if they can do the other and ignoring the 'further away' qualification. The Fare checker just needs to know if a particular ticket is valid on a particular train AFAICT. I looked for anomolies with trains pausing or on circuitous routes "to London" but all seemed to be either wholly within the zones and so irrelevant or as trivial as the 1058 Guildford via Epsom arr 1211, 1102 direct arr 1140. -- Mike D |

The "Super Off-Peak" tickets fall under one of two restriction codes. Code BD is: Outward travel by any train except those timed to depart Mondays-Fridays before 1100. Code BE is: Outward travel by any train except those scheduled to arrive at London Terminals or Kensington Olympia Mondays-Fridays before 1200 and connecting trains. Looking on QJump suggests that Walton-on-Thames to London falls under the latter restriction, as the first train it's showing as valid for Super Off-Peak tickets is the 11:41, arriving 12:06. Walton-on-Thames to Surbiton, however, appears to be the former restriction, with the first available train the 11:11, arriving 11:17. Cheers, Barry |

There is another apparent anomaly though - having announced that _all_ trains 'towards' London are in the new regime, they don't seem to be, eg Eastleigh to Basingstoke is still on the original CDR set up all day. There must be another rule about distance too. Paul |

The point being that Basingstoke (and Reading) have routes to London using a different TOC so SWT has effectively excluded them from the new regime with only a 0.10 difference in fares. Not easy to find out until the fares are available on the OJP! The point being that Basingstoke (and Reading) have routes to London using a different TOC so SWT has effectively excluded them from the new regime with only a 0.10 difference in fares. Basingstoke to London CDR 16.40 SuperoffpeakDR £16.30 I think a lot of people in South Hants have been taken in by the phrase 'The price rise and introduction of Super Off-Peak fares will apply to journeys from all stations _towards London_' on the website, and in the leaflets. Its clearly not as straightforward as that, and perhaps the effect isn't as widespread as imagined, especially given that the further out you get, the nearer you must get to the Network Card 1000 limit, for instance the first super off peak from Poole is at 1001...
