"Sir Benjamin Nunn" wrote How about scrapping the circle as it is, scrapping the Olympia shuttle, and running Olympia-Olympia via the circle instead? And maybe fill in the missing SW corner of the circle by running a few H&C trains to South Ken or Gloucester Road. One earlier idea wass to combine the H&C and the Circle by running Hammersmith - Edgware Road - Liverpool Street - Embankment - High Street Kensington - Edgware Road - Liverpool Street - Barking. ups.com... I think a good line would be across south London to Heathrow. This line, which I call the Charlton-Heston Line, would be coloured deep purple. Another line from Croydon to the city (the Shirley-Temple Line) would be coloured black, and the Northern changed to cyan. Alan Excellent! -- Regards John |

Hmm, all these round the circle routes feel 'wrong' to me. I guess I'm just attached to the old-fashioned idea that a railway service should travel a desirable route from beginning to end. BTN |

Another old-fashioned idea is that the service should be reliable. And a reliable service will be much more likely with a T-cup or something other than a circle. -- Michael Hoffman |

"Sir Benjamin Nunn" wrote How about scrapping the circle as it is, scrapping the Olympia shuttle, and running Olympia-Olympia via the circle instead? Flat junction apocalypse! And maybe fill in the missing SW corner of the circle by running a few H&C trains to South Ken or Gloucester Road. Are there currently reversing bays or such at either of those? ISTR there's some kind of funny arrangement at Gloucester Road which might make this plausible. Also, not sure the Hammersmith posse will like losing some of their handful of trains. One earlier idea wass to combine the H&C and the Circle by running Hammersmith - Edgware Road - Liverpool Street - Embankment - High Street Kensington - Edgware Road - Liverpool Street - Barking. I think this makes a lot of sense - it's exactly like the present H&C and Circle patterns, except trains switch identities every time they go past Baker Street. The only problem is if you want to go from Hammersmith to Barking, but who does? What was the problem with it - is the duty too long or something? tom -- Few technologies will ever stand up to the will of adolescents trying to do things they're told they're not allowed to do. -- Scott Berkun |

IIRC they tried it during the Notting Hill Carnival one year, and that was what they found. |

"Jane Sullivan" wrote If you want to go from Hammersmith to Barking, you take the District Line. You might. But if you hold a Zone 2-6 Travelcard and a lot of time you might take the District Line to Gunnersbury and then go by NLL, changing at Gospel Oak. Peter |
