Which, in fact, it was. It was an entrance drive to Barn Elms House,
which burnt down in the 1950s. Barn Elms Park was the name for the
estate which occupied the area now known as Barn Elms Playing Fields and
School Sports Centre.

After the mansion was destroyed, there was no need for the long entrance
drive (there's alternative access from Rock's Lane), so Horne Way was
built across the north end, leaving the entrance drive as a curiously
detached appendage, retaining the original name of the 100+ acres of
open space that are still there. I'm surprised it was never sold for
development, as there is ample green space in the area - but its a
pleasant little oasis, even if a bit mean as parks go!

Wow, thanks, I wasn't expecting a reply, but you've made perfect sense of it
all.

Next question... Putney Park Lane... what's that about? (the long shingled
part, not the little tarmacked bits).

A: My cousin's wedding! Another cousin was a bus driver at the time, so
hired one and drove the wedding party from St Margaret's church to
wherever it was they had the reception.

A good shot, but I was thinking of an even shorter route very much
closer to Putney Park Road.

The 207 started from Barnes Railway Hotel (later re-named The Red Rover,
now the junction of Roehampton Lane with the South Circular). Its
six-minute route simply went up Priory Lane then returned via Clarence
Lane and Roehampton Lane. It was apparently used mainly to take golfers
from Barnes railway station to Richmond Park Golf Club. It ran every 15
minutes on Mondays to Fridays, requiring only one bus since the round
trip was only 12 minutes in length. Two were needed at weekends when it
ran at 10-minute intervals.

The route was started in 1928 by an independent operator with a Bean
12-seater:

The route was taken over by London General, and then London Transport,
who used the original 1930s' Dennis Dart 18-seaters. The service was
withdrawn in 1939 and never re-started after the war.

It's oddly fascinating because I suspect it is the only London bus
service that did nothing more than (quite literally) run round the
block.

Do you mean Roehampton Club (which the route goes all the way round)?
There's a rugby club in that block too, but I'm not sure that was
there in 1928.

So when did the current 207 start? Tram replacement or Trolleybus?
