writes Barn Elms Park. It's about as wide as a road. Which, in fact, it was. It was an entrance drive to Barn Elms House, which burnt down in the 1950s. Barn Elms Park was the name for the estate which occupied the area now known as Barn Elms Playing Fields and School Sports Centre. After the mansion was destroyed, there was no need for the long entrance drive (there's alternative access from Rock's Lane), so Horne Way was built across the north end, leaving the entrance drive as a curiously detached appendage, retaining the original name of the 100+ acres of open space that are still there. I'm surprised it was never sold for development, as there is ample green space in the area - but its a pleasant little oasis, even if a bit mean as parks go! -- Paul Terry |

Wow, thanks, I wasn't expecting a reply, but you've made perfect sense of it all. Next question... Putney Park Lane... what's that about? (the long shingled part, not the little tarmacked bits). |

A: My cousin's wedding! Another cousin was a bus driver at the time, so hired one and drove the wedding party from St Margaret's church to wherever it was they had the reception. Bet you all wanted to know that, didn't you? tom -- You have to give up |

Which regularly timetabled London bus service had a route length of little more than a mile and ran with tiny buses (initially 12 seaters) roughly parallel to Putney Park Lane? -- Paul Terry |

Limehouse to Surrey Quays... OK so it was north to south and wasn't very long... do I win a prize? Cheers Steve M |

A good shot, but I was thinking of an even shorter route very much closer to Putney Park Road. The 207 started from Barnes Railway Hotel (later re-named The Red Rover, now the junction of Roehampton Lane with the South Circular). Its six-minute route simply went up Priory Lane then returned via Clarence Lane and Roehampton Lane. It was apparently used mainly to take golfers from Barnes railway station to Richmond Park Golf Club. It ran every 15 minutes on Mondays to Fridays, requiring only one bus since the round trip was only 12 minutes in length. Two were needed at weekends when it ran at 10-minute intervals. The route was started in 1928 by an independent operator with a Bean 12-seater: http://www.bwlr.co.uk/beancars.php The route was taken over by London General, and then London Transport, who used the original 1930s' Dennis Dart 18-seaters. The service was withdrawn in 1939 and never re-started after the war. It's oddly fascinating because I suspect it is the only London bus service that did nothing more than (quite literally) run round the block. -- Paul Terry |

There's a rugby club in that block too, but I'm not sure that was there in 1928. So when did the current 207 start? Tram replacement or Trolleybus? Colin McKenzie |
