TfL fares frozen for next year
See: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/7068282.stm
From January 2008 Oyster PAYG and cash fares will be frozen at this year's prices. A report on BBC London (radio) said the official announcement on next year's fares is due tomorrow (tuesday). Also, Travelcards are to rise by 3.8%, the rate of inflation. It'll be interested to see what will happen with regards to Oyster daily price capping - for the past couple of years, the daily price cap has been set at 50p less than the 'equivalent' Day Travelcard. Two possible options: (1) Will the daily price caps will go up so that this 50p differential continues - meaning that some journey combinations that currently qualify for capping won't get capped next year? (2) Or will the daily price caps also be frozen - in which case the difference between the daily price caps and the 'equivalent' Day Travelcard will be more than 50p? I won't lose any sleep over it (!) as presumably the answer to this will be revealed tomorrow. |

Judging from the Mayor's press release it seems the cap remains 50p below the ODTC price effectively meaning it increases and thus some journey combinations will no longer be capped as TfL fares don't change. http://www.london.gov.uk/view_press_...eleaseid=14274 The footnote re Travelcard acceptance on the North London Railway is particularly irritating. Why do press offices make these sorts of errors? They just cause confusion when they get repeated by the rest of the media. -- Paul C |

I was wondering why they have to reannounce all the recent changes (eg the bus reductions) - it just makes the entire press release far too complex, surely people just want to know what is changing... Next year is the mayoral election and whether we like it or not fares are a political issue. As the press release for fares always comes from the Mayor's office these days it's no surprise at all that there is all the commentary about recent changes plus a comparison of prices over the current Mayoral term. Something tells me that Travelcard rates are not yet finalised and given that TfL prices aren't changing there's no real need for detail this time. Normally there is an attachment that shows all the detail when there are changes but not this time although there's the link to the TfL press office so who knows for certain. -- Paul C |
