It is unfair that London pensioners should be able to use the public
transport in other cities (buses) but non-Londoners cannot make use of the tube which is standard PT in London, as pensioners down there can. -- Clive. |

Hmm. Presumably London pensioners aren't allowed to use (for free) Metrolink, Merseyrail, T&W Metro, Supertram, etc...? -- John Band john at johnband dot org www.johnband.org |

I don't think the respective local pensioners can use them free either - its only a national bus pass scheme the government have insisted upon isn't it? Paul |

Clive. ("Clive." ) gurgled happily, sounding
much like they were saying: It is unfair that London pensioners should be able to use the public transport in other cities (buses) but non-Londoners cannot make use of the tube which is standard PT in London, as pensioners down there can. Non-Londoner pensioners can use the bus in London. Can non-Sheffield/Brum/Manc pensioners use the trams/light-rail in those cities? |

Free local bus travel across England for those 60+ and yet you have a gripe! Saying that the Tube is "standard PT in London" is pretty nonsensical. Plenty of people (under 60) travel by bus rather than the Tube because bus fares and bus passes are cheaper. I'm not sure how the English National bus pass scheme will be financed but in London the Freedom Pass has been funded by the local borough councils, who will evidently continue to fund the Freedom Pass scheme for travel on the Tube and railways in London (there is an ongoing dispute between the London borough councils and TfL as to the amount they pay for this, but that's another issue). If you want to reduce the cost of travelling by Tube then if you hold a Senior Railcard you can now have a discount concession loaded on to your Oyster card which will mean that your off-peak daily cap will be a third less than the standard cap. |

(snip) Take a look at this promotional poster for the English national bus pass scheme... http://www.dft.gov.uk/144130/165192/...ressadvert.jpg or via http://tinyurl.com/25xyf6 ....and not the small print: ----- * Some authorities choose to fund additional benefits to their residents, e.g. train, tram or peak time bus travel. As a general rule, these additional benefits will only be available to local residents. ----- There's no bias. There's free bus travel on all local buses across England for all English residents. Depending upon where you live, you may get more in your local area, but that is a matter for your local authority. |

But the tube is not 'standard' PT in London, it is just part of a system which also relies heavily on buses. And bus provision in London is much better than most other places - doesn't that even things up a bit? |

Quite right. I'm all for equality. Pensioners have the same size backsides as other travellers (some, due to living on chewing leather and oversweetened beer for nourishment during the war years, now have HUGE rear ends) and should all pay full price. -- Brian "Fight like the Devil, die like a gentleman." |

Blame the Government. They have made the silly rules on this free bus scheme. -- Colin Rosenstiel Are they really such silly rules? Would you let all English pensioners use the railway network across England for example? |
