PAYG Ealing Broadway - Greenford
 

I've seen a notice today that says that PAYG is valid Ealing Broadway -
Greenford (but not at intermediate stations) on FGW services with
immediate effect. Note that the planned extension of validity to
Paddington has NOT occurred yet.

But this isn't anything new, as Oyster PAYG has been valid between
Ealing Broadway and Greenford since January!

My evidence being the 2008 fares booklet - specifically page 19
detailing Oyster PAYG validity on National Rail (PDF)...

at one end of the line intending to travel to the other but then for
some sensible and unforseeable reason (received a message their
appointment was cancelled, felt sick, was frightened by hooligans on
board, etc) changed their mind and got off earlier?

They'd automatically be charged the £4 'penalty' fare for an
uncompleted journey if they only touched-in and didn't touch-out (or
likewise didn't touch-in and only touched-out).

However the plan is for standalone Oyster readers to be installed at
the intermediate stations so Oyster PAYG could be used to start or
finish a journey at any station on the line.

In this case the intermediate stations are deserted halts so the worst
that could happen is there being nowhere to touch out.

My first thought was that's it's been valid a lot longer than that,
via North Acton.

Maybe if there aren't any ticket checks or barriers on the FGW trains
and stations, it's a recognition that people are going to go that way
anyway.

I was thinking in American (due to an incident at Whitechapel about
thirty years ago that has evidently scarred me for life).
