At about 07.40 on Sunday morning 20/07/08, I saw a westbound train at
Aldgate East. The destination on the front was "CIRCLE LINE". There was no mention of it on the platform train describer. The PA sounded something akin to: "This is a Circle Line service via Liverpool Street". Where might it have been parked? What wanderings do Circle Line services do? I have occasionally been on a Circle or H&C service which has suddenly transformed itself into the other sort of service but have not previously seen this sort of presentation. http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk/use...guage=en&type= stop&id=1000004 implies the Circle Line serves Aldgate East. Similar pages suggest the Circle goes as far as Barking. !! OTOH, it is not reported to go to Royal Oak - on the way to the Hammersmith sidings - or to Earls Court on the way to Wimbledon or Kensington Olympia. -- Walter Briscoe |

What wanderings do Circle Line services do? Probably entering service from Upney (Barking) sidings, where a number of C-stock trains are berthed nightly. I recall this service from my time living in Barking. It always caused a degree of confusion to the bleary-eyed, early on a Sunday. Not least because, with no H&C service east of Whitechapel on a Sunday, nobody at Barking expected to see a C-stock train in service. Plus, of course, the obvious question as to whether this 'Circle Line' train would become a clockwise or anti-clockwise service! Chris |

Surely it should announce as H&C to Edgware Road or District to Gloucester Road (is that possible?), as appropriate, until reaching Liverpool Street/Tower Hill? |

It is not unusual for a train to be taken from Circle Line service and out to Aldgate East or even Whitechapel and then sent on its way as if it had gone through Aldgate - the effect is to turn the train. The C stocks can serve virtually all of the District Line - not just Wimbleware - but if you saw a Circle at Aldgate East, it was probably being turned. -- Phil Reynolds DON'T MAIL IN RESPONSE - I am unlikely to read it Web: http://www.tinsleyviaduct.com/phil/ Waltham 66, Emley Moor 69, Droitwich 79, Windows 95 |

Have seen a C stock arrive at Mile End w/b on Circle Line duty early on a Sunday too. I just imagined it had started life at Plaistow/Barking. I also saw a C stock at Mile End one Saturday evening a few years back, but that was when Chelsea were playing West Ham. So it was some sort of special added for the football traffic I'd imagine. I didn't see the front of the train, but the indicator at the time said Wimbledon. |

I've never worked out why any such move would be necessary. Nowadays, the Barking sidings are mainly used for C stock, with the odd bit of D stock, but I think before the Jubilee extension and its effects on Neasden, there wasn't much C stock stabled at Barking, but some was stabled at Neasden. I wondered how they went into service from there, but I never saw it happening. |

They only have the Wimbleware part of the District on their line diagrams. They used to oddly have Olympia, even though they didn't go there as far as I know. |
