![]() "Rupert Candy" wrote None in SouthEastern-land yet, more's the pity... SouthEastern appear to be the only TOC who haven't made any sort of firm commitment to accepting Oyster, so I have no great hopes of anything happening soon. Southeastern do accept Oyster PAYG, but only between Elephant & Castle, Blackfriars, and City Thameslink. But they say this on their website ( and the information seems to be about a year old): "We do already accept season tickets on Oyster on our network ( within the valid zones) and while we do not yet accept Oyster Pre-Pay, Southeastern announced its commitment to work with Transport for London (TfL) to introduce Oyster Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) on Southeastern within two years. The implementation of PAYG will require significant investment and Southeastern is working with TfL on issues such as the need for additional validators at stations; the ability to sell and top-up Oyster; and the possibility of installing automatic ticket gates at some stations. There are still a number of issues to resolve but we hope to implement Oyster PAYG on Southeastern in 2009. Oyster PAYG will not be cheaper than our usual rail fares." AIUI this is in line with their franchise obligation. Peter |

Interesting observations. *Looks like there is a concerted programme of work to get validators installed on at least 3 TOCs (FCC, FGW, NXEA). Any signs of life south of the river? I've just seen newly installed supports for smartcard validators as far away as Woolston (near Southampton). Doubt they'll be reading Oyster though... Back to the OP in this thread however, these new validators at KX are presumably just extras, PAYG is already valid there, but I guess validators were a bit thin on the ground on the direct route from the mainline platforms to the tube ticket hall? Paul S A validator for South West Trains smartcards is installed (but not functionning) at Windsor & Eton Riverside, not just the support. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pi...&id=1372309255 I don't think there's any indication yet as to what it will work with. There are also smartcard validators on the Sheffield to Doncaster line (e.g. at Meadowhall) but that's for South Yorkshire tickets. http://www.yorcard.com/ Jonathan |

Must be the ITSO smartcard franchise commitment. Back to the OP in this thread however, these new validators at KX are presumably just extras, PAYG is already valid there, but I guess validators were a bit thin on the ground on the direct route from the mainline platforms to the tube ticket hall? I'd agree they are extras but they provide more flexibility as to platform use and avoid people being able to say they never saw a validator at or near the platform their train used. Very interesting - that looks very like the set up (complete with "hat") that is used on the New Territories Tram network in Hong Kong. There they have specific entry and exit validators with different coloured "hats". Anyone know who SWT have contracted to implement their ITSO equipment? ERG did the HK system and that looks very close to the HK design. I understand Cubic have got the gating work for the franchise commitment gating stations. -- Paul C- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - They appear to be installing them down here in the South West too. Areas for fitting the readers have appeared in two positions at Axminster station and stations to Pinhoe, nothing at Exeter Central/ St. Davids, then again they are fGW. I think they may be appearing at stations West of Salisbury, then again they are on about cutting booking office hours down this end of the route. Martin. |

According to the website: "Yorcard will be available on the following services as the pilot scheme develops." "All trains between Sheffield and Doncaster: * Sheffield - Meadowhall - Rotherham - Moorthorpe/Doncaster * Sheffield - Meadowhall - Rotherham - Doncaster" However there has been no update on the Latest News page to say that this is the case. As a rail passenger in West Yorkshire (which is co-funding the technology with SY) frustrated with the limitations of paper based ticketing; I am following the developments on this initiative with interest... Have you got any photos of the validators? Do they resemble the SWT ones as shown above? |

I don't know whether it was working at the time. It wasn't the same design as the South West Trains validator. Jonathan |

And yet they seem to be ahead on selling Oyster, or maybe that's only at Lewisham, where they definitely sell it at the counter now* and there's a card-only machine (which often doesn't work when I go there for the purpose). One might suppose that this would be to do with the DLR, except that the DLR doesn't sell Oyster. *Actually they disappear off to some other part of the ticket office to do it, but at least they can. |
