The main difference is that everything MIG did was entirely within the
rules, which Virgin chose to enforce incorrectly - while your
situation was understandable, you were very clearly and literally
travelling without a valid ticket (although ironically, if you'd been
dishonest enough to not leave the platform and try and touch out,
you'd have been fine...!)

Not sure if it still happens, but up till Jan last year a couple of class
165s would stable overnight in plat 10.
