I did try to conjure up a journey for the new service on South Eastern's site and also National Rail but neither had any record of the departures and therefore the fares couldn't be displayed. Fares wise, the route is being interwoven into the national network - basically it will become the new "Any Permitted" route (and route AP tickets will thus carry the HS1 premium), whilst there will be new route "not HS1" fares (that won't attract the premium). In this context national Railcard discounts will surely apply on the HS service - though whether the (SE England-only) Network Railcard will be valid is perhaps less clear (bearing in mind that it's not a 'statutory' railcard, it's an opt-in arrangement for the TOCs). The Kent franchise ITT (we've quoted it on the premium %ages before) simply goes on, (following the bit about 'No travelcards') to state: "All Railcards (e.g. senior citizen) will be accepted at the appropriate level of discount." There is nothing about PRIV discounts either way, AFAICS... Paul S |

My enquiry (and response) was regarding both Free and Privilege discounted travel over HS1 on domestic services for retired ex-BR management staff. Hope that this is unambiguous! JohnG |

If this should be the case then any support I had for this venture will disappear very quickly and I will look forward to its failing! Welcome to the bitchy world of the railway employee! Anyway, before all you privileged lot get your knickers in a twist it's perhaps worth waiting for the official word on this, rather than just going by some random internet rumour-mongering. I wonder whether rail staff might basically get everything they normally get apart from having to pay the undiscounted HS1 premium... but we shall see what actually transpires in due course. |

I have had a reply to me query about Britrail Vailidity on the HS1
preview services (that's **Britrail validity**)services. You're going to enjoy the reply: Dear Mr J Smith (still not my name) Thank you for your website comment dated 1 June, concerning our high speed preview service. I can confirm that there is no free or reduced rate travel for rail staff (including those with Britrail Flexi-passes) on our high speed preview service. However, we're currently finalising the policy with the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) and Rail Staff Travel about our high speed services. Thank you for taking the time to contact us. Yours sincerely David Geraghty Customer Relations Officer Southeastern I am of course left still wondering what happens if, like me, you're not ex-staff with a Britrail pass! tf |

To me it, a humble railway employee, it makes no sense whatsoever and could quite easily signal the demise of staff travel discounts which have been in place for decades. It is of course also worth noting that it doesn't do much to encourage use of the train by employees of the company who operate it! Like I said, any support I would have had for the HS1 venture is now gone. If you wish to **** on your own by not letting them use your service, discounted at least, then you do not deserve to succeed in my opinion!! |
