Default Touching in/out at Stratford

Can someone tell me if you can touch in/out with PAYG on the pink
route validators on the Overground platforms (there is both a sign
above them for touching in/out) or do you have to touch in on the
central line and then go over and touch the route validator if you
want to use the overground?

Also if you are using the Overground between Stratford and H&I do you
have to touch the route validators at both ends.

Thanks

In order to answer the question properly it would be helpful if you
could say what your start and end points of your journey(s) is / are and
what ticket product(s) you are using. * This is to assess whether you
need to set an alternative route for pricing purposes or not - that will
set the answer as to whether to "Pink" or not.

I was guessing that Beth was thinking about STARTING a PAYG journey
with a pink, perhaps changing from NXEA.

Even if I guessed wrong, that's an interesting question anyway. One
would hope so.

I did two journeys on Friday. I went from Tottenham Hale to Stratford
using PAYG and then caught a train to Colchester. Previously I have
always had to touch out on the Central line platform as there is not
anywhere to touch out on platform 12,11,10A,10 or 9. Today though I
thought I would walk over to the overground platforms as they are next
to platform 12. All the Oyster circular pads on the Overground
platforms have the pink circles on them but there are two signs above
them on tell you about route validation in pink and the usual one in
yellow telling you to touch in an out. I decided to chicken out and
just use the yellow Oyster pads on the Central line platform.

On the return trip I needed to use the Overground, so I touched in on
the central line and then on the validator on the overground platform.

hope that makes sense. sorry if reply too long

I think this really illustrates just how complex this has all become.
You're obviously a very well-informed passenger who's just trying to do
the right thing, and yet you weren't sure what to do and had an
unnecessarily complex journey. The average passenger is unlikely to
understand the system nearly as well as you do, and is also quite likely
to forget to validate when changing between Oyster/non-Oyster trains.

Here's another one or two:

I have a zones 1-3 season ticket but last week I had a multi stage journey
starting at Forest Gate, stopping off in Stratford to nip into the shopping
centre, then going to Kew Gardens to do some work and then nipping down to
Richmond before heading home. Kew Gardens is on the zones 3/4 boundary so
for the outward trips it was season then season then PAYG with no
extensions. For the return I took the direct North London Line, touching in
at Richmond. When I got to Stratford I tried touching on the pad on the
Overground platforms and got an error, so tried again and got the same
error. I then went to platform 8 and tried on the Central Line reader and
*think* I touched out successfully but am really not 100% sure. I then
caught the train to Forest Gate.

Given the multiple platforms in use (including locals that use platforms 9 &
10), one would expect the Overground platforms to have all the relevant
readers actually on them - if I'd made the trip late at night or on a Sunday
would I have to still go to platforms 3-8? Sometimes those platforms are
sealed off - where is the interchanging Oyster user supposed to touch out
then?

It makes perfect sense to me. In respect of recording an "exit" for your
T Hale to Stratford trip then you need to use a Yellow validator as they
set entry and exit on your card. *My understanding is that the pink
validators do not enter or exit you from the system - they record an
intermediate location which is used by the reader at the end of your
journey to positively confirm the route you took and therefore determine
that an alternative lower fare can be paid. *In the instances you
describe you need to be using yellow readers because you are finishing
or starting journeys for PAYG but then using a separate ticket to
venture outside the PAYG area on National Rail.

In January your situation may change if your journey to Stratford
commences in the zonal area say at Romford. You could touch in there and
if then using Overground to wherever then touching on the pink validator
at the Overground platforms would confirm you changed at Stratford.
Looking at a Romford to Tottenham Hale journey the base fare is assumed
to be via Stratford. *Looking at the alternative fares there are then
three other options for travelling via Zone 1 including the tube,
changing platforms at Liverpool St and then a peculiar option of
Overground to Hackney / Highbury or Gospel Oak and then changing on to
another service be it NXEA, the Vic Line or I assume GOBLIN for Gospel
Oak.

Happy validating!

If that is the case Why have they got a yellow sign (as well as the
pink sign) over the pink validators telling you that you must touch in
and out and the beginning and end of your Journey?

I just wish they could put yellow Oyster pads on all the platforms not
just 5/6 & 7/8
