(last year's statement) In line with the Oyster PAYG off-peak fares,
there will be a change to the times when South West Trains' Super Off Peak `turn up and go' ticket is valid for journeys from London. http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/any...k-advance.aspx click on -Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak fares- [...] From Monday 4 January 2010, the return portion of a {Super Off-Peak} Day Return or Day Travelcard will change. You cannot use it to leave London Waterloo, Vauxhall, Queenstown Road or Clapham Junction to stations outside London Zones 1-6 between 16:00 and 19:00, Monday to Friday. A map of this area is available here. If you wish to make your return journey during this time, you should buy an Off Peak Day Return or Off Peak Day Travelcard == So no need for an Anytime Day return Is this different to the rule as used in North London ? Seems easy to get round in most cases by taking the first train to Richmond, Wimbledon or Surbiton and then the train you want. My previous scheme of buying a day return to Surbiton plus a London zones 1-6 ODTC also. The new possibility is a day return plus PAYG Oyster touching in & out at a Surbiton validator (£3.20+£4.90 so capped at £7.50 - £5.00 with Railcard) -- Mike D |

Basically yes, it could be. For some TOCs their normal reduced fare is the Offpeak, and you often do need an 'Anytime' to travel in the afternoon peak. Seems easy to get round in most cases by taking the first train to Richmond, Wimbledon or Surbiton and then the train you want. Well that's definitely a logical interpretation of what they've published, assuming changing at any of those stations is practical - as others have suggested it's a lot of hassle if you are heading to somewhere like Southampton or Portsmouth. I reckon many TOC's rules imply limitations of use on 'trains' departing between those times, ie you wouldn't be able to join them further along the service. But what SWT have written might work for them, a service that is first stop Woking will empty significantly there, and cope with SOP ticket holders joining. Paul S |

Indeed, first train to Surbiton then first to Woking may be a bit much trouble to save 20% or so but the idea may be useful if you unexpectedly have to get home and don't want to shell out extra. -- Mike D |

Still much better than waiting until the 19:30 tim |

Update - I asked in uk.railway this morning, prompted by a similar question about LM restrictions. Super Off Peak (SCO) Woking-Waterloo: Restriction : BD OUTWARD TRAVEL: By any train except those timed to depart Mondays - Fridays before 1100. RETURN TRAVEL; By any train except those timed to depart London Terminals, Queenstown Rd or Clapham Junction Mondays to Fridays between 1600 & 1900 inclusive. So that is basically the way the restrictions are usually shown in the fares manual - which means you can't join a train elsewhere. Paul |
