It's usenet. innit.

It can be trying at times, and I say that in the full knowledge that
I've participated and probably fuelled such polarisation at times. It
can be hard work attempting to aim for level-headedness and
reasonableness in all of one's contributions... it's sometimes easier
to just blurt it out as it comes.

As might be expected from the bankrupt wholly Spanish-owned BAA its
train services were cashing in big-time on the disruption to the
Piccadilly Line this weekend. In the past All Zone Travel Cards have
been accepted on both HEX and CONnect. However in an admirable
demonstration of 'rip-off' Britiain, and at the expense of its long
suffering airline passengers, BAA and its two Paddington / Heathrow
train 'services' were not accepting any Travel Cards this weekend.
Instead BAA was charging the usual full-price rip-off fares it
normally does for its tatty and worn trains into outer London. And HEX
staff were seen today (Sunday) at T5 ensuring that passengers do
indeed pay the exorbitant 18 (whatever) SINGLE fare into West London.
Indeed they were stationed at every TfL ticket machine deterring
passengers from even thinking of going by tube/bus/tube into Central
London. CJB.

Looks like Chris J Brady has been sending this bolloc#s to the press too:

Hardly surprising TPTB won't give him a new Freedom pass then...

"NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED" but he hasn't got the balls to let them at
least publish his name. I'm almost tempted to take it apart and
challenge it line by line... not that it'd make any difference to him.

I don't really understand the reason for the polarised arguments in this
debate. I have thrice forked out the enormous cost for a taxi to Gatwick
because of a flight so early that I wasn't confident that the bus to
Clapham Junction would get me there on time. One of these three
occasions was fine, on another I only just arrived at Gatwick in time
because of a jam on the M25. On the third occasion (earlier this year)
the taxi couldn't even get onto the M25, let alone anywhere near
Gatwick, and I missed my flight.

If you live near clapham why would you need to go near the M25 to get to
gatwick? Straight down the A23 onto the M23.

In contrast, I've never had the slightest delay in either direction when
using Southern's CJ-Gatwick service. It's faster, more relaxing and very
much cheaper than a taxi.

To be fair , my main gripe is with the tube. I don't use the main line
south london services enough to really know how good or bad the service
on the brighton line is.

Says the man who evidently doesn't know about the A23! The train is
the very clear winner for any such journey.

Huh? The point was how he got there by road. Unless you suggest driving along
the railway line.

I made that mistake once, tried to drive from Gatwick to Clapham High St on a
Saturday morning, took me over two hours. The quick (fsvo) way is,
counter-intuitively, actually round the M25 and in on the M3.

We're having a bit of a misunderstanding here - see Paul Terry's reply
re the road route out to Gatwick from where he is (which takes in the
M25). "Straight down the A23" is basically only possible at night or
in the early morning!

You can cut off a big dog-leg on that route by leaving the M25 at
junction 9 and taking the A243 through Chessington to get to the A3.

Even if one is heading for 'central' south London then I've been told
that leaving the M23 and heading along the M25 from junction 7 to jn 6
on the A22 Caterham bypass to get in to Purley is preferable to going
straight through Coulsdon on the A23.
