I thought the issue was the reduction in the premium for working that day (probably caused by the anomaly that it isn't technically a "holiday") Different strikes, different unions. The Aslef guy pretty much said on TV that their demand was an inflated starting point, and they expected TfL to compromise in the middle. Instead, TfL has just dismissed the claim, so Aslef members stand to get no pay at all on the day. Serves them right! |

Still no updates for Boxing Day and the same 'mid December' message as of five minutes ago.

It is now 16th December, and Tfl still haven't uploaded information for Christmas, let alone New Year. Other more organised transport operators seem to have no problem with updating their websites in good time, but it seems keeping their customers informed is too much for TfL. |

The Xmas and New Year travel guide leaflet provides an outline as to what services will be running - if you want to see a graphical illustration as to which bits of the Tube will be closed then look at the "Future dates" facility on the service update page he http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/livetravelnews/realtime/tube/default.html Genuine question - what would you have done in this situation *before* the online Journey Planner was around? (FWIW, in those simpler days, the "Journey Planner" moniker was actually given to the Tube map.) |

I suppose that in the Stone Age before the internet was invented you would just have to use the leaflet or phone 01 222 1234, or just turn up at the bus stop/tube station and hope for the best. I can remember back in the '70s there was even a service on Christmas Day. |

[...] But that's what I would have done now anyway - the info in the leaflet is pretty comprehensive. Well, I wouldn't have called 222 1234 - you can't anymore, but I wouldn't have called the new number either - I would however have checked on the Tube 'service update' page to see what Tube lines were and were not running, and then I'd have gone to the bus stop or Tube station knowing that a service was running. (OK, with less frequent bus services it's helpful to know the timetable - though one can find outline bus timetables on the journey planner - and also a timetable can be helpful for the extremities of the Tube. And for services in the morning, the leaflet's "from about 0830" pointer as to when services will start is admittedly somewhat vague.) [...] I can remember back in the '70s there was even a service on Christmas Day. There was certainly one or two special central London services run on a commercial basis by a bus company (London General IIRC?) in recent years, but nothing of the sort ran last year and nor will it this year. |

Of course the printed leaflet gives a good general idea of what services are running, but sometimes you do need detailed information. Up until 2001, there were a number of special services running on Christmas Day, run commercially by a number of bus companies. I remember getting service 729 from Wood Green to Central London, and service 755 from Central London to Morden. I do feel that there is scope for running a skeleton service on the buses on Christmas Day. Perhaps if a continuous service was run on all the night routes and 24 routes from late evening of Christmas Eve to the early hours of Boxing Day. I know this is not likely to happen in London, but it does in other UK cities. Edinburgh, for example, runs a skeleton service on key routes from about 11am to 10pm on Christmas Day, and presumably would not do so if there was no demand. |
