The scheme's docking stations were not in the airport's safety zone, it said, but a TfL transport assessment "clearly shows the cable car passing through the passenger safety zone". It passes over the last few square metres of the proposed enlarged zone, not the current passenger safety zone. Planes are usually at around 2000 feet at this point, because of the steep flight paths required at LCY. I believe the cable car will be at about 200 feet, so there's good clearance. I don't really know what the risks are, but airport PSZs are defined by the CAA as areas "to control the number of people *on the ground* at risk in the unlikely event of an aircraft accident on take-off or landing". Thanks, I didn't know that. So it's an area where you don't want to be building nursery schools, but a cable car passing through the zone is not much more of a deal than a bus passing through the zone, of which there are presumably many. |

Yes, Woolwich Manor Way, Connaught Bridge, and Silver Town Way are all within the proposed new PSZ for London City. The safety zone is a triangular area at both ends of a runway that starts off being about three times the width of the runway and gradually tapers to a point about a mile away (the distance depending on the type of aircraft used). In many cases, much of the zone is within the perimeter of the airport (or over water, in the case of London City), but the tip may extend into surrounding areas. The Department for the Environment specifies that there should not be new residential or office buildings in the area (and owners of existing premises have to be given the offer of compulsory purchase if they wish to move) but it permits things like roads (except motorways), car parks, golf courses, allotments and warehouses (providing that are not intensively used). There are maps showing the current and proposed PSZs for LCY at: http://www.lcacc.org/safeguarding/index.html -- Paul Terry |

The cable car would cross the river at a height of over 50 metres, similar to that of the Dome offering spectacular aerial views of the Olympic Park. The cable car could provide a crossing every 30 seconds carrying up to 2,500 passengers per hour in each direction, equivalent to the capacity of 50 buses or just over 1.5 central line trains per hour. The scheme is currently subject to a public consultation exercise. It is planned that the cable car will also be able to convey bicycles and that passengers will be able to use Oyster Cards to pay for their journeys.
