[1] Even a moderate traveller might have:

Credit card for domestic expenses [##]
Credit card for business expenses
Company ID/door key
ATM/Debit Card [##]
Bus/Oyster card [##]
EHIC or private medical card or prescription card [#]
Airline Frequent Flyer card [##]
Hotel "FF" card [##]
Library card
Driving Licence
Supermarket loyalty card [##]
'Other' - Blockbuster etc loyalty card [##]

Ok , I'll give you most of those, but Library card?

If you live in Nottingham City (rather than the County) they are trying to
combine the library card with access to other City services, including any
free bus travel.
http://www.citycardnottingham.co.uk/

But 'sarf of the river, here in Rushcliffe, we have a library-only plastic
card.

Which reminds me, add Health Club membership card to the list!

And Blockbuster card??
Are they still even doing those?

You appear to need one to rent a DVD. And hardly a day goes by without
some minor chain of shops trying to convince me I need one of their cards.
I've got ones here for Boots,

I had absolutely bother not getting a Boots card. Getting one point per 25p
spent is hardly worthwhile if you only spend a fiver a year (I assume that
you don't get points on prescriptions)

But if there's a woman in your life, and Boots just happens to be the
local store, then the points will mount up quite quickly, I assure you!

just how inconvenient is it to push a few buttons on a ticket machine?

Very, if you'd had to wait ten minutes for the privilege. Twice, if like
me you queued in front of two identical-looking machines (from a
distance) only to find one did destinations A-M, the other N-Z (or
whatever). Take a bow, London Bridge National Rail.

How is a 10 minute wait "very inconvenient", for a family with children -
they are hardly going to detrain from Eurostar and need to be, wherever, in
30 minutes!

Yeah, but what do *you* need a card?

We popped in the other day and bought about £6 worth of stuff using
points from the card.

Just shows what different standards you seem to have.

why would a child want to pay adult Oyster fares when they could buy a

Convenience.
You might as well ask why people pay to have their groceries delivered
when it would be cheaper to go to the supermarket on foot or in your own
car.

just how inconvenient is it to push a few buttons on a ticket machine?

Very, if you first need to queue, or if you don't read English.

Oh, of course, families don't have other trains to catch. I'd forgotten
about that.

No? It would cover 7 adult singles between Victoria and Paddington.
