![]() Anyone have an update date - or should that be date update? Couple of my friendly DLR-folk told me the other night "still sorting out bits and pieces" - but they were too busy to pass on any details. I think at one stage 7 March was mentioned, but there have been several other dates - and ISTR we were previously hoping for January. Does anyone know why the delays - or are we still ahead of the official programme timings? I guess DLR have trained us, as it were, to expect projects to be completed early. Ken |

We are well past the anticipated opening dates which were variously Jan
2011, Feb 2011 and possibly March 2011. Therefore dates like "late Spring" or "early Summer" are now mentioned but you can debate what that means. Just so long as no-one mentions "late Summer"! -roy |

I can remember the Jubilee (Fleet) line being finished in a hurry for something or other at Stratford, so important that the moving block signalling was abandoned. Anyone remember what it was? What's the likelihood something will delay the DLR and compromises will be made? -- Clive |

The opening of the millenium dome in North Greenwich, rather than anything at Stratford. There were multiple delays on the Jubilee extension, including escalating costs, lack of promised finance, and worries about the New Austrian Tunnelling Method used. But the full moving block signalling had to be abandoned because it was an untried system developed by Westinghouse, and couldn't be made to work. -- Paul Terry |

There were multiple delays on the Jubilee extension, including escalating costs, lack of promised finance, and worries about the New Austrian Tunnelling Method used. Is that the same method, where the tunnel collapsed under Heathrow? Have they got anywhere near getting it working on the Jubilee yet? Did I hear that the Jubilee was to be automatic like the Victoria and Central lines are? -- Clive |

Yes, and Yes - the Jubilee has been using moving block since Christmas, (it's known as the 'transmission based train control system' (TBTC)) , except for the section between Dollis Hill and Stanmore. The conventional signalling is no longer used, which is why it is all covered up. Paul S |

I have read nothing - even on the rumour mill boards - that gives anything firmer than "no one really knows". Lots of people are clearly keen to see it open but we all just have to wait until whatever the issues are get resolved and DLR can train its staff, test all the systems and get through the necessary regulatory processes before passengers can be carried. Maybe they learned from the Woolwich opening, but it is taking longer than expected to train staff with anger-management and clue-possession issues in the difference between "ticket-buying passengers photographing a new railway" and "evil terrorists planning to take over the world"? Perhaps I might take a copy of the DLR's letter of apology with me when I go see the new bit, just in case! -- Arthur Figgis Surrey, UK |
