Line, change at Oxford Circus for the Victoria, is not realistic with
two suitcases and a carry-on.

I completely agree. I always take minicabs to airports, I just can't be
arsed with public transport not least because it'll probably go wrong
anyway. However I got the train+tube home from gatwick last week because I
wasn't in a hurry and so ended up sitting outside purley for 10 minutes then
a slow slog all the way to victoria. Ended up taking over 2 hours to get home
to north london. The flight was only 3! Next time I'll just get a cab and
hang the cost.

two suitcases and a carry-on.

I've done cross-London a few times with two suitcases and a carry-on
(some designs will clip onto one of the suitcases). But I wouldn't
recommend going via Victoria; you should choose the route with that kind
of thing in mind. If Victoria and luggage implies Gatwick, for example,
you can usually construct much more manageable journeys via Thameslink.

some trips where it's quicker to walk).

If luggage and stairs is the issue, I'd try: Heathrow to St Pancras by
Piccadilly, northern ticket hall, Thameslink, change to the Bognor train
at Gatwick.

When I have changed off Thameslink, I have found Three Bridges a

decision. But if money and convenience are the main factors, suitable
routes are not always the direct ones.

As with any journey you are balancing cost and time. That's a personal
decision. But if money and convenience are the main factors, suitable
routes are not always the direct ones.

Also balancing the amount of luggage. I take journeys with a
briefcase I would never consider with two suitcases and a carry-on.
Deep level tubes are exactly a case in point.
