How can an electric train consisting of 2 seperate units completely break
down? Surely even if one unit is declared dead the other would be able
to push/pull?

I had the pleasure of a NoL-Eurostar failing last week. Failing so
completely that none of the motor cars was operative anymore - and in
consequence not even loudspeakers anymore. 2 km outside Valenciennes
station.

Solution applied: send out a Z23500 (2-car EMU:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SNCF_Class_Z_23500 ) as tractor unit, to
drag the errant Eurostar back into the station.

Hmm, do these use the same electrical arrangement as the Three Capitals
sets, which we were assured were designed to be proof against a complete
traction failure (unless in exceptionally severe winter weather, of
course) ?

AFAIK, yes (or did SNCF make changes that eliminated that capability?) -
and I had the same thought.
