The driver on my bus home got out of his cab last night to wrestle with an
offensive passenger. It all started when the bus took off rapidly causing him to stumble. Next the racist abuse, accompanied by a justification that he'd been badly treated himself as an earlier migrant to London. The driver pushed the passenger out of the door and he then forced his way back on again. In the end a friend and I had to part them as they grappled on the lower deck. I managed to persuade the driver that it wasn't a good idea to thump the passenger and my friend suggested to the passenger that we might act on the driver's behalf if he didn't sit down. This kind of thing isn't unique in Streatham :-( Probably the first time I've seen the driver get so personally involved and quite frankly I'm fed up with reporting anti-social behaviour to TFL getting little more than assurance about some initiative or other. There's no doubt that there are many more buses available now and they run much later but why oh why can't antisocial behaviour be treated more seriously? As it stands many people, especially the elderly are deterred from travelling because of fears for their own safety. Can we have a real and visible initiative stop all this please? Jeff Mowatt |
