The trouble with being the first in any technological field is that the hardware and operating systems get locked into the original technology, because it is tends to be more difficult and more expensive to upgrade to later and better standards than starting from fresh. London Undedrground has been paying the price of having been the first in the field for a long time now. But bringing the system up to 21st century standards surely cannot be much longer delayed. can't. *However, when the government finally realizes that it has to spend its way out of the recession and increase taxation to pay for it, we might be ablle to see a start made of doing the job in a piecemeal, incremental manner. Who are you going to tax, and how? There are so few industries left to tax out of existence. Too much talent, and finance, has left the UK. Had HMG saved during the good years, now would be the time for national infrastructure improvements. HMG did not. There is no money to be had. It would be better to cut tax and allow business to create new wealth. |
