Really? Perhaps in your strange world but folk with children will have to
take some time off during the summer to fit in with the school holidays You're kidding? On this side of the pond parents can and do take the kids on holiday anytime they want. -- Cheers. In the UK it's almost impossible to get permission to take kids out of school during term-time for a holiday. My own school says it won't authorise term-time absence for any of the following reasons: availability of cheap holidays availability of desired accommodation poor weather experienced in school holiday periods overlap with the beginning or end of term .... so all that really leaves is religious festivals or unavoidable family matters (like burying a Grandmother who lives overseas). -- Roland Perry |

The 50 quid fine is less than the excess it costs in travel costs in peak months. B2003 |

The 50 quid fine is less than the excess it costs in travel costs in peak months. It's nothing to do with fines. Parents and schools need to feel like they are on the same side, and there's a huge amount of emotional blackmail over this particular issue. The real blackmail is in the holiday companies and airlines stiffing people with exhorbitant fares during school holidays. There's no reason for them to do it , they just do it because they can. Its naked profiteering. B2003 |

There's no reason for them to do it , they just do it because they can. Its naked profiteering. Isn't it just a case of them offering lower fares during quieter periods. Are railways profiteering by charging more during peak periods? Almost certainly, yes. The prime example is Virgin Trains' peak services into Euston which are far from rammed full. Virgin has chosen to charge very high unrestricted fares in order to extract a huge income from these services even though they are far from full. Lower unrestricted fares would mean more passengers would travel, filling up the trains, but at a lower overall income to Virgin, which is why they prefer the stinging, ultra-high fares. In the USA, which we in the UK often regard as the home of unfettered capitalism and a mostly unregulated free market, such practices as Virgin Trains routinely operates would be regarded as evidence of illegal profiteering and punished severely. |

Its naked profiteering. There is more demand for a limited commodity, ergo the price is higher. That's just market economics. The cheaper prices at other times encourages those who can (those without children, primarily) to holiday at other times. Neil |
