Another alternative would be to take the Piccadilly to Kings Cross,
and then either the Northern or Victoria line one stop to Euston (from
memory I think the Northern line would be the easier one to change to

Good idea. From the Piccadilly Line platforms at King's Cross there's a
short escalator down to the Northern Line. (whereas changing to the Victoria
involves going up some stairs)
