I was talking to a friend, yesterday evening.
He reported a couple of recent occasions in which train cancellations meant he was unable to get home by train. On a weekday, he intended to travel between Wimbledon (WIM) and Banstead (BAD), via Sutton (SUO). The last connecting train from Wimbledon at 2249, operated by First Capital Connect, was cancelled. He was therefore unable to catch the 2327 from SUO to BAD, operated by Southern. He was refused provision of a taxi as WIM is operated by South West Trains (SWT). Was the staff member correct? Where are the rules documented? Would the rules be different for travelling with Oyster or a Freedom Pass? -- Walter Briscoe |

You need get as far as you can (would be sensible to obtain evidence of the delay) , then when you get stuck the TOC there assists. This is the case even if that will result in a big taxi bill or hotel bill, e. g. a one stop connection into the Scottish Sleeper. Where are the rules documented? The NCoC, though these don't cover where assistance must be obtained. Would the rules be different for travelling with Oyster or a Freedom Pass? Don't think so. Neil -- Neil Williams. How much further could he have gone if there was no other train to Sutton from Wimbledon? Worry about that when it arises; in general there are later trains, the 2317 or 2349 Wimbledon - Sutton, plus going via tram to Mitcham Junction is a possibility (at risk of ticketing complications). SWT should have told him about those options, surely? -- Colin Rosenstiel |

SWT should have told him about those options, surely? Is there any suggestion they didn't? Plus the screens would presumably show it if he was actually at the station. Note the issue was "last connecting train" cancelled, not "last train". So the official answer is probably to get the next train and then non-rail transport from Sutton, not a taxi all the way from Wimbledon. -- Arthur Figgis Surrey, UK |
