What an appalling idea. (Using music as a deterrent)

Why? The loudness and style of music in numerous central London bars has
longed deterred many of their potential customers.

Although Spring played constantly while I was held in a queue for a
help-line did put me off Vivaldi for a while....

Try a shift with continual Wozzek or the anguished screams in Pierrot
Lunaire coming out of the Tannoy and you will soon see how music could
be a deterrent - music, like drama and painting, can be intentionally
seriously scary.

(mmm ... some of the more abrasive output of the New Manchester School
could prove very effective in clearing a station in an emergency

Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto should be played permanently at
Clapham Junction (or was it London Bridge; someone will know!)

Are you thinking of "Brief Encounter?". That was the fictitious "Milford
Junction", filmed at Carnforth in Lancashire.

A man's vehicle is a symbol of his manhood.
That's why my vehicle's the Piccadilly Line -
It's the size of a county and it comes every two and a half minutes

Classical music was being played through the newly
installed speakers in the ticket hall and on the ramp

had Piano Music to listen to.

Is this happening at other stations?

Cambridge went through a phase of this - I haven't heard any piped
classics for a couple of years now, though, so I guess it's stopped.

In Cambridge, the biggest hooligans enjoy classical music!

A certain cable company who I get my broadand connection from, used to play
a particular Dire Straits instrumental track non stop on their help line
queue during a period of particularly bad service a couple of years ago -
put me off the band for good!

Thanks; I always thought it was supposed to be a London station, and
that the woman lived in Surrey.

In 2002 there were experiments in playing classical music at various bus
stations (including Hammersmith) that were deemed successful. Part of
the thinking was apparently that potential vandals and trouble-makers
tend to leave the premises because they don't want to listen to
"that rubbish" while everyone else feels more relaxed and a bit safer.

(I imagine they don't include much Stockhausen or Webern!)

Edgware bus station has piped 'Baroque' music. My BF couldn't believe it
was being used as a means of social control, when I told him.
