PS There is a useful guide to where to avoiding steps at https://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downlo...tube-guide.pdf for wimps like me who no longer fancy lugging c.50kg up and down stairs You can tell the journey planner to avoid routes with steps Yes, although that is AIUI "all or nothing" so, for example, will rule out routes which involve even just a few steps on the way from street to platform - and indeed rule out stations with ramps which suitcases can be wheeled up. -- Robin reply to address is (meant to be) valid |

Yes, it would better if it had two options: "no steps" and "minimise steps". |

news ![]() 1] Tube: Piccadilly Circus to Heathrow. Also, why does everything on the internet say depart from Piccadilly Circus for Heathrow? They'd be arriving at Victoria Station from East Croydon, so getting the Tube from there to South Kensington would get them on the route, surely? Yes - Barons Court or Hammersmith offer the easiest interchange with the Picadilly Line. You could avoid a nasty change at Vistoria by going via Blackfriars instead; this should be a step-free interchange. 2] The X26 express bus from Whitgift Centre. How reliable is this? Does it get packed? Does anybody know the typical prices for one way: Croydon to Heathrow? 3] Tube from Victoria then train from Paddington. This sounds to me the most circuitous route, but I could be wrong. Possibly the most expensive too? Certainly expensive. If you choose this route you may find a 36 or 436 bus between Vistoria and Paddington easier than the tube. -- DAS |

I have had it not turn up on me in the past, so leave lots of time and have a back-up option in case the bus is cancelled. But it will be the simplest option, if a somewhat tedious[1] journey. It is just a normal single bus fare, whatever that is these days. In the context of getting a flight from Heathrow it will be financial background noise. You would be getting on at the start of the journey, so would be sure to get a seat. You might need to check where it goes from, as West Croydon bus station is currently closed for rebuilding. [1] Although with the best will in the world, Croydon to Heathrow by any mode is never going to be "waking up at Sirkeci to catch the steamer for Haydarpasa" or "watching bears from the window of The Canadian" :-) -- Arthur Figgis Surrey, UK |

Not being Londoners, they don't have any relevant travel passes. Which route would you recommend for speed and/or cheapest tickets? 1] Tube: Piccadilly Circus to Heathrow. The bus is fine for getting from eafrow to Croydon, but it's a brave man who relies on a bus to get them TO the flight on time... I've taken night buses (or crack of dawn buses) as part of a journey to get to an airport several times without a problem. I've taken coaches at a similar time to get to Stansted and Luton for horror-o-clock departures. But yes, this isn't a horror-o-clock departure! East Croydon/Victoria/Oxford Circus/Paddington is actually pretty easy because of the cross-platform interchange between Vic and Bakerloo at OC, and avoids the horror of the Picc. The Piccadilly is alright. Alternatively, East Croydon/Victoria/Hammersmith/Piccadilly Line. Much easier (cross platform) interchange at Hammersmith than South Ken. Or change at Barons Court for the same effect - a less busy station, and more interesting in my reckoning. |

By going via Blackfriars, you're heading significantly out of the way just to use a step-free route. It depends how much that step-free route matters to the passenger in question. Victoria Underground station is indeed very busy in the morning peak, but it does still work and passengers do pass through it, albeit slowly. Again it depends the passenger(s) in question. (I'd do it, for example!) I'd be a bit wary of heading via Blackfriars because it's Thameslink... and we all know how the Thameslink route (particularly the core) likes to take a little lie-down at rather inopportune times. |

The examples I have seen have a dual carriageway with bus stops, and the TFL journey planner chooses the nearest. When the destination is on the other side, oops ! Try Kingston-upon-Thames to KT19 0EB [Ewell Court, Lakehurst Road, Ewell] I also got it on a trip from Ashford Hospital to TW18 4HW where crossing the A30 is possible but not where suggested (SE Travel Planner has a problem too because Open Street Map hasn't got the crossing). -- -- Mike D |
