That was quick! The first 387/2 unit destined for Gatwick Express is now
on static test at Derby: Quote: Static testing of the first of the Class 387/2 Electrostar electric multiple-unit cars ordered for Gatwick Express services has begun at Bombardier Transportation’s Derby plant. The 27 four-car Class 387/2 EMUs are scheduled to enter service between London Victoria station and Gatwick airport in 2016, replacing 1980s-built Class 442 EMUs which have been used on the route since 2008. The £145·2m order for the Class 387/2 EMUs was signed by franchisee Govia Thameslink Railway in November 2014, financed by Porterbrook Leasing. They are based on the Class 387/1 EMUs ordered for interim use on Thameslink branded services, but customised to provide additional luggage space and ‘easier boarding’ for airport passengers. They will have 2+2 seating, at-seat power points, wi-fi, Liebherr-Transportation Systems air-conditioning and automated passenger information. http://www.railwaygazette.com/news/t...u-on-test.html ______ I assume this was the very last Electrostar order? Meanwhile, is the future if the current 442 fleet any clearer? |

Oh dear. Is *everything* to do with the railways a year late nowadays? It's not late at all, is it? The order was only signed last November. Presumably there will be more testing on the Brighton line before they go into passenger service; and there will need to be quite a few produced before they are deployed on the GatEx service. I assume they'll be running as eight and 12 car trains? |

They must have signed the order late, because back in September 2014 when the combined TSGN franchise started they issued a flyer saying that the new Gatwick Express fleet would start entering service in June 2015. The next deadline they are likely to miss (MizterT vapourware alert!!) are "Franchise wide smart ticketing" and "Oyster extensions" arriving in September 2015. -- Roland Perry |

The key readers and validators are being installed all over the Great Northern route - I've seen the photos of the installed kit on uk rail forums. I expect TSGN are deliberately not installing anything at Ely just to annoy you!!! You'd have thought they would have learned by now! It also seems Oyster is going to reach High Speed between St P and Stratford International from 31 July 2015. That's good news. https://www.southeasternrailway.co.u...e/news/oyster- extended-to-stratford-on-our-high-speed-services Also to Hertford East in the near future. http://www.hertfordshiremercury.co.u...Hertford-East- Ware-St/story-27471416-detail/story.html What about the other places? -- Roland Perry |

They're still claiming The Key on the rest of GTR in the email I had today about the absorption of the Southern franchise. Any date given? Wasn't there also a plan to install it only as far north as Cambridge. -- Roland Perry |
