Now that ticket offices are closing, how is it supposed to work? Google on your phone. And the backup for when the battery dies or there is no coverage? Also, phone screens are much smaller than the pocket map so I actually find paper easier to use. You think they care? Its cost cutting wrapped up as technological advancement. -- Spud |

Now that ticket offices are closing, how is it supposed to work? There are supposed to be bright, shiny smilling staff serenely gliding toward you to offer you unparalleled customer service. Oh hang on back to reality. There will either be no one in sight or else groups of staff having a natter and doing nothing to help anyone in the ticket hall. That "doing nothing" includes making sure that leaflet racks are properly supplied throughout the day. Now Kings Cross probably has a huge demand for tube maps given the major stations upstairs but even so that should be understood and the staff should ensure adequate supplies are ordered and displayed so the racks don't run out. London Overground seems to do better at managing leaflet supplies and keeping places neat and tidy then LU does these days. It's as if the attention to detail has gone on LU stations. Well said, especially as the main KXSP ticket hall appears to have no leaflet racks at all. -- Colin Rosenstiel |

In fact it's better for tourists than locals, as tourists will roam onto an available network but locals are SOL is they just happen to be in a blackspot for their carrier. As for the battery, my experience is that the battery doesn't die between breakfast and getting back to the hotel in the evening unless I'm playing video games. But even in your doomsday scenario there are always the maps on the wall. -- David Cantrell | semi-evolved ape-thing Anyone willing to give up a little fun for tolerance deserves neither |

That is because of the nature of the Overground concession. LOROL get fined if there are empty leaflet racks, out of date posters etc, so there is a direct financial incentive to check them regularly. Peter Smyth |

Keeping a phone charged is just requires a little foresight and management. The application I linked to is a functional map in airplane mode, so no coverage required. Also, phone screens are much smaller than the pocket map thankfully - you don't have to faff with unfolding bits of paper in a crowded place. You probably need two hands to deal with a paper map, which can be challenging if you're standing on a crowded moving train, whilst with a phone you just scroll around the bit of map you need with a thumb, single handed. -- DAS |
