om... 1. Buses are as fast as trams - even with diesel engines. If Croydon trams ran long sections on the road mixing with cars, or if London buses ran on a proper network of properly enforced bus lanes, that would become clear. The maximum acceleration of both buses and trams is set by passenger comfort - I reckon both can reach that maximum. I take your point, however bus acceleration in London is pathetic. I'm sure a lot of congestion could be eased if buses were able to accelerate away from stops without causing the whole chain of traffic to have to stop dead. 3. Buses ride just as well as trams, if you put them on a well surfaced road. Therein lies the rub! 4. Diesel buses are more environmentally friendly than electric trams. Although buses produce more pollution at the point of use, A pretty major issue in a major city such as London. I often worry about the quantity of bus fumes I inhale whilst walking and cycling round London. Whilst it's true that cars and other vehicles produce these as well, it's the bus emissions that are particularly unpleasant and noticeable. This is one reason why I always try to avoid allowing a bus to pull out in front of me. DS |
