Very often they are.

Cyclists do this really annoying thing:
You are listening out for cars as you cross the road - suddenly, when the

How about *looking*? Sorry if that sounds like it might be a sensible
thing to do, I know you Londoners find that a complete anathema [1],
but it might be worth a try one day...

The number of pedestrians who cross the road without looking is
phenomenal. They do seem to work on the basis that if you can't hear
it, it can't hurt you. Sorry mate, but that just doesn't work - I can
cycle at 20mph on a flat road, and my bike *will* hurt you if I hit
you. I'll try not to, of course, but if you amble right out in front
of me with no indication or backward glance, I might well not be able
to avoid you.
