I was thinking today, what is going to happen to the existing Kings Cross
Thameslink when the new underground St. Pancras station opens? Will they still leave it connected to the system as an alternate route when the new line is closed, or maybe use it for freight? Daniel. -- email : heliomass (at) lykos (dot) co (dot) uk replace the 'k' with a 'c' in "lykos" |

The new station will be built around the existing line, and when the new station opens, the trains will still run through the closed station without stopping. Note that a similar thing happened to the Circle Line in the 1940s: the Circle platforms at what is now Kings Cross Thameslink closed, but the Circle Line trains continue to run past those platforms without stopping. (The only difference is that the new Circle station was created by separating the running tracks and putting a new island where the old tracks had been - at St Pancras Midland Road, the new platforms will be built outside of the existing pair of tracks.) -- John Rowland - Spamtrapped Transport Plans for the London Area, updated 2001 http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acro...69/tpftla.html A man's vehicle is a symbol of his manhood. I was thinking today, what is going to happen to the existing Kings Cross Thameslink when the new underground St. Pancras station opens? Blown off the face of the earth I hope. It has to be the worst station on the UK rail network in terms of facilities and environment in relation to the number of passengers using it. If I understood a recent Modern Railways itme correctly, there is presently some doubt as to whether or not the new KX-SP-CTRL station will be completed ahead of TL2000 works. As the latter has yet to be authorised, I interpreted that as it may not be opened. I hope thats either wrong or I mis-read it. -- Nick -- Posted via Mailgate.ORG Server - http://www.Mailgate.ORG |

I was there yesterday and found it very annoying that there is an underground tunnel linking Kings X and ThamesLink, but no mention of it above ground. -- To reply direct, remove NOSPAM and replace with railwaysonline For Railway Information, News & Photos check out the Award Winning Railways Online at http://www.railwaysonline.co.uk "Loving First Great Western Link since 2004" |

To use it you have to have a ticket valid on the Underground because you have to go through an Underground gateline and the route is much slower and more convoluted than the above ground way. The weather would have to be really atrocious for it to be a sensible route when starting at ground level. Dave. |

It is not better or convenient to go the underground route from Kings Cross concourse to Kings Cross Thameslink concourse. Dave. |

Yes, but the underground route between the tube and Thameslink *is* signposted from all deep tube platforms and also from the Thameslink end. -- John Rowland - Spamtrapped Transport Plans for the London Area, updated 2001 http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acro...69/tpftla.html A man's vehicle is a symbol of his manhood. If you have a ticketvalid for a through journey that involves changing from Kings Cross or St Pancras to Kings Cross Thameslink, you almost certainly have a ticket with LUL validity. Are there any tickets which will work the gates at KXTL but not at KX (LUL)? Peter |

My understanding is that the new St Pancras Thameslink station is
opening next year. The line is being split in September to facilatate work with trains from the south terminating at Kings Cross Thameslink( a crossover is being constructed) or Blackfriars. Trains from the north will run into the new part of St Pncras being constructed on it's east side. I for one hope that Kings Cross Thameslink remains open when St Pancras Thamselink station opens as it provides useful connections to the Underground which the new station will not have. Although they will be a quite near each other the distance will still be further then between Blackfriars and City Thameslink. Though Kings Cross Thameslink will have to close if train lengths ever got increased to 12, nevertheless while the whole Thameslink 2000 project remains in abeyance they should not close the station.
