There is a plaque in the ground, showing the line of the Meridian, next to the northbound route 97 bus stop opposite Chingford Police Station. This is a few hundred metres from the obelisk on top of Pole Hill, which sits on the Meridian and was once used to line up the transept instrument at the Greenwich observatory. I'm told that there is another such plaque at Higham's Park broadway (close to the station), but have never gone looking for it. Not on the LT system, but I've certainly seen a plaque when driving along the south coast at Peacehaven, near Newhaven. -- Annabel Smyth http://www.amsmyth.demon.co.uk/index.html Website updated 8 March 2004 |

[google] http://peacehaven.net/meridian.html There are probably dozens of markers up and down the country. I saw a milepost-style meridian plaque in East Grinstead the other day, and at the other end there is one near Ottringham in East Yorkshire. There is a marker in Cleethropes, and I believe Louth. Someone, somewhere has probably got a website listing them all. Some OS maps have a big line to mark the meridian - I knew someone who won a competition and got as a prize the complete set of Peacehaven - Tunstall maps. -- Arthur Figgis Surrey, UK |

There's a Millennium Meridian marker on the A10 Melbourn bypass: http://greenwichbook.com/line/os-maps.htm is helpful. -- Roland Perry |

Thanks - that answers a question for me, I had been wondering which hemisphere my daughter, who lives in York, was in! -- Annabel Smyth http://www.amsmyth.demon.co.uk/index.html Website updated 8 March 2004 |
