One of the Shepherd's Bush tube stations was awesome (furthest east,
anyway). Does anyone else think so? Jan |

I'm trying to compile a list of interesting things to go see on the "tube" on a day trip. Engineering mainly, like the crossover at the end of the Oxford St Bakerloo, the scale of Canary Wharf and the tunnel out of Bank-DLR. What others can the team suggest? Step-plate junction and being able to see across to the other platform at the southern end of the Bakerloo at Piccadilly Circus. Wartime trackside flood-gates at both ends of each Northern & Bakerloo platform tunnel at Embankment and Waterloo (Bakerloo ones are more "visible"). More visible closed stations between Kentish Town & Camden Town (South Kentish Town), TCR & Holborn (British Museum), and Caledonian Road & Kings Cross (York Road - well-lit emergency exit). Also surface building of the same (bar) Mritish Museum) and a few others (e.g. Brompton Road & Down Street - in need of a blue plaque?!). Wartime Deep Level Shelter entrances/blockhouses. "Fake" house at Leinster Gardens and District Line in cutting at rear (between Bayswater & Paddington). Memorial plaques at Balham, Bethnal Green, Bounds Green (WW2) & Kings Cross (the fire). Disused Wood Lane station platform northbound between Shepherd's Bush & White City. |

Snip Memorial plaques at Balham, Bethnal Green, Bounds Green (WW2) & Kings Cross (the fire). To see the one at Bethnal Green, take the Roman Road exit (on the left as you exit the gates. Also, the memorial at Baker Street with the old shell-case used for charity collections. Disused Wood Lane station platform northbound between Shepherd's Bush & White City. I like seeing the lights at the Old Ford fan shaft and the rush of air that rattles the doors when you pass it between Stratford and Mile End westbound. I'd add the underground garden at Stepney Green (near headwall of the eastbound platform) which a supervisor there told me is going to be remodelled soon.. There's a rather nice tiled sign on the stairs there too. -- Kat Me, Ambivalent? Well, yes and no. |

snipped out Paul's fantastic list of things to see on the network! Whitechapel - District / H&C track layout will change soon so if you want to see it in action look now. Also Whitechapel is a bit odd with mixed levels plus the ELL platforms. I had assumed the plans to rebuild Whitechapel had been dropped. Are they still going to change it to three tracks only, with the middle track having access from both eastbound and westbound platforms? When is this planned to be done? Cheers, Dan |

Mansion House, where what looks like a tube-style platform becomes an island

Also off-beam, Ruislip station is worth a visit. I believe that the station, together with the signal box and footbridge, is a listed building. -- John Ray, London UK. |

Barkingside on the Central Line - another world and most unlike a Tube Station. Some of the Met Line stations qualify in this regard too. Sounds intriguing. Can someone elaborate on this? tom -- Why do we do it? - Exactly! |
