At a guess, the train actually terminates at Slough, but is a stopping
service, so it's advertised as terminating at Langley to make journeys
faster.

Probably so. But this policy is bad for occasional travellers, as I'm
standing there thinking "Langley", where on earth is that?

A similar thing applies at Kings Cross, where the slow services to
Cambridge are advertised as terminating at Foxton.

Indeed.

I used carnets rather than a Travelcard several years ago, but expecting
a foreign tourist to get though at least eight out of ten tickets in one
trip seems a little unrealistic.

OOI, how long are carnet tickets valid for?

Usually a year.

As a carnet user though, that's the decision you make. I've got several
odd ones and twos left off Paris carnets, cos if you're there for a
week or two you never know how many you'll use before you leave (and
then can never find the old ones next time ).

Mindyou, being able to use two or three carnet tickets for longer trips
made them much more useful so it was worth getting them, even if the
last dix might not be finished.

But it seems less of a gamble at Paris fare levels. The single fare there
is 1.30 EUR = 86p, and a carnet ticket works out to 1 EUR = 66p.

(In case anyone is curious, in Toronto it's CAD 2.25 = 90p single, and the
carnet-equivalent is 5 rides at CAD 1.90 = 77p each. Including transfers.)

The majority of tourists will be in groups, not solo, so can do that
more easily.

I keep mine in the purse my Euros live in; haven't been to Paris for
ages, but last time I went, my carnet tickets from several years earlier
were still valid!

I reckon the average group size will be less than two (ie lots of
couples and many single people). On the occasion in question I was a
tourist travelling alone.

This is going to sound extremely dumb, I know. But when did a simple Z1
tube fare increase to Two Pounds? Well, that's what the machine at
Paddington charged me to go to St Pancras.

Another question: From reading the literature closely it seems I can't
use Oyster pre-pay to travel from Central London to Ealing Broadway by
national rail. Although I can by travelcard (Oyster or paper), and both
ends have Oyster-operated gates.

Is this true, and if so, how is the casual user supposed to cope?

(There seems to be a whole page in the guide on how not to get charged
the wrong amount when transiting Wimbledon).

I think it's until the end of the current month, plus a year. So
between twelve months (if bought on the last day of the month) and
thirteen (if bought on the first).
