Apparantly Silvertown and North Woolwich stations are to be closed, and Customs House station, serving the Excel conference centre, will be enhanced. Is this an opportunity to provide a rail shuttle service between Customs House and City Airport? This would be a big improvement over the current arrangements for accessing City airport, and would also benefit the conference centre (like the Birmingham Airport / NEC / Rail Station complex. Ideally, the shuttle would be small traqins running every 5 minutes of so. AKA Docklands Light Railway extension from Canning Town to London City Airport. Frequency will be every 12 mins initially then every 6 mins once demand increases. Once the further extension to Woolwich opens, frequency might increase to 4 mins. The Thames tunnel portal will be around here somewhere (before the Connaught tunnel) so it will probably "break" the North Woolwich branch. Also, the current City Airport terminal is too small. Could they provide check in facilities at Customs House station? One other thought - the new tunnel to East of Customs House will be under utilised, as it will only take half the CrossRail services. Could the North London line be extended to Abbey Wood and Dartford? That would open up Stratford, which is becoming an important hub in its own right, to North Kent. Already suggested. 8tph Crossrail and 4tph North London Line would terminate in central platforms at Abbey Wood, with 4tph Crossrail continuing to Ebbsfleet. However this depends on whether the DLR takes over the NLL between Canning Town and Stratford in order to easily serve Stratford International. Either way it will be possible to provide through trains between Woolwich and Stratford or Abbey Wood and Stratford. It seems the DLR Thames tunnel, the CrossRail Thames tunnel, and the London Gateway bridge (with tram?) decisions are being taken independently. With the CrossRail tunnle, I'd have thought the DLR tunnel would be come a bit of a luxury. |
