I can't agree with you there, it was only the unions which kept firemen and guards on trains in the sixties for safety reasons when the B.R.B. Wanted single manning for economy, bugger the safety. What I can't understand is why we feel the need to under-staff our trains for reasons of economy, when in the USA they seem able to employ not only one guard (or "conductor", as I understand they are called there) per train, but seemingly one per carriage! No question of fare evasion there - your ticket is checked every trip, and a chitty put into a slot in the luggage-rack above your head, so the staff person knows they've done it. The trains were a lot nicer than ours, too - roomy, comfortable, and, above all, CLEAN, even the loos - and there was drinking-water if you wanted it, which I always do. How come "the land of the free" is so much more comfortable with high levels of service than we are (don't get me started on how many different staff members they seem to need to serve you in the cheapest of restaurants!)? -- "Mrs Redboots" http://www.amsmyth.demon.co.uk/ Website updated 12 December 2004 |

ups.com... perhaps they'd like to try door to door selling around various rough east end council estates like I did when I was younger where you risked getting bitten by the some knuckle draggers pitbull or beaten up by the local gang and have all your stuff nicked! I bet you got some action from the housewives though! -- John Rowland - Spamtrapped Transport Plans for the London Area, updated 2001 http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acro...69/tpftla.html A man's vehicle is a symbol of his manhood. No traffic, no steering wheel, no worrying about the next fare sticking a knife at your throat. Hell hole my a*se. Sure they have to train for lots of emergency situations and have to know to do A if B happens or C if D happens, but 99% of their time is spent sitting on their backsides moving a lever back and forth. Yeah , tough life! But you chose to do the job, if you didn't like it you could have quite easily found something else, such as joining the underground and having a nice cushy job. I didn't like it. I did leave and get something else. Thats the whole point. If these lazy *******s working for LUL don't like their pay and conditions why don't they just **** off and go and do something else? Funnily enough you never find any off them giving an answer to that! B2003 |

Your assertions point to you being just a liar. You have never
driven tube train and you've no idea what it involves. Excuse me? I never claimed to have driven one dickhead. Why don't you go catch a clue train instead of a tube train then get back to me. And spare me that captain-of-the-ship routine we frequently get from tube drivers. Its not in the same league. All you do is **** about with a little lever (and not even that on the victoria and central lines!) and press the door buttons 99% of the time. Don't pretend its a tough job because if you do I'll call YOU a liar. B2003 |
