Hi all...
Only ever having driven in London and facing a trip to the Albert Hall from Kent this Saturday by public transport, what's the best tube to emerge from? Plan so far is to leap on a train here in Folkestone, find out what station I arrive at in London and dive down the nearest tube and navigate by a handy leaflet I pick up. Not much of a plan I know... ;o) -- Remove Frontal Lobes to Reply |

If you come into Victoria, you are probably just as well off to catch a 52 bus direct to the Albert Hall. Bus Stop B at Victoria Station according to the spider map. |

(Just round the corner in Grosvenor Gardens) I think you'll find that trains from Folkestone arrive at Charing Cross, not Victoria. You could get the tube from Charing Cross, but it's easier to exit by the stairs near the Pltaform 1 barrier and walk down Villiers Street to Embankment station. Then any westbound District or Circle Line train to South Kensington. Turn right immediately you come through the ticket gates at South Ken, and walk along the museums subway to its end, then continue at street level to the Hall. About 10 minutes' walk. -- Richard J. (Just round the corner in Grosvenor Gardens) Trains from Folkestone don't come into Victoria. Catch the train from Folkestone to Charing Cross. Walk to Trafalgar Square and take the no 9 bus from Stop S all the way to the Royal Albert Hall. I believe that Stop S is to the north-east of the square - the opposite corner from Charing Cross, but look at the map on any of the bus stops outside Charing Cross Station to find its exact location. Walk out of Charing Cross Station and catch a number 9 Bus (showing the destination "Hammersmith") from the stop on the Strand, on the same side as the station. You'll need to buy a ticket from the machine at the stop before boarding (GBP 1.10, exact money needed), unless you've bought a Travelcard as part of your train ticket. The 9 will drop you right at the Albert Hall and the journey time, depending in traffic, should be about 20-25 minutes. -- Ian Jelf, MITG Birmingham, UK Registered Blue Badge Tourist Guide for London and the Heart of England http://www.bluebadge.demon.co.uk |

Number 9 (also) leaves from almost right outside Charing Cross station - just a bit to the left as you walk down the steps onto the Strand. I also recommend this as it drops you off right outside the Albert Hall rather than having to walk for 10 minutes from South Ken station. Just remember to buy a £1.20 ticket from the machine at the stop before you board at Charing Cross; buy the ticket from the driver when boarding outside the Albert Hall. -- Dave Arquati Imperial College, SW7 www.alwaystouchout.com - Transport projects in London |

The No.9 is indeed likely to be the quickest route, but get it from Stop H immediately outside Charing Cross Station - Stop S is in Cockspur Street and not the best choice. The spider-map will show the OP the whole route, and the boarding and alighting points: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/buses/spiders/...aringcross.pdf -- Paul Terry |

Ha! Someone else who, like me, still has to think twice to remember that Charing Cross got renamed Embankment! Colin McKenzie |
