No. Figures for emigration are estimated from surveys. People go abroad
for a visit, like it and stay ... this is much easier for young men
without families, hence that particular demographic shortfall.

Ah. I wasn't sure whether maybe the act of taking up official residence in
another country (which I presume is logged in the country to which you've
emigrated) also generated a corresponding entry in the country that you've
left. Evidently not.

I presume that that does happen betwen countries which have official
residence lists, eg France and Germany, but seeing that this country doesn't
have such a list, there is no way of registering that a British citizen has
taken up residence abroad. Consulates try to keep a list of their nationals
in foreign countries, but in stable and law-abiding countries where there is
little need to keep in touch with consulates in case there is a need to get
out quickly, expats often don't bother. There is no obligation to. How many
Irish living in Britain register with the Irish embassy? Very few I should
think!
