Is it just me or does it seem like someone at the top of TfL has it in for
the Borough of Bromley? The Tube stops as New Cross, the Tram stops at Elmers End/Beckenham Junction and the 726 coach is now to finish in Croydon. The Bromley North branch lost its through trains years ago and Thameslink services to Sevenoaks are now a distant memory. I recall that the Fares Fair campaign started in Bromley - is this someone's revenge? Regards, Max Batten Visit me at http://www.thebattens.ndonet.com --- avast! Antivirus: Outbound message clean. [snip] I recall that the Fares Fair campaign started in Bromley - is this someone's revenge? The Fares Fair challenge was apparently cooked up by a few local councillors in a pub one Sunday lunchtime. Any borough that chooses to run its democratic processes in that way isn't likely to engender any respect anywhere. Isuggest you look elsewhere for sympathy. |

Indeed. The GLC wanted to include BR in the fares fair policy, but the
then Conservative government and it's Secretary of State for Transport, Norman Fowler, blocked the move. There's more information on this website: http://www.bilderberg.org/farefare.htm True, it's a partisan account of the affair, but then again I'm sympathetic to the authors viewpoint on this matter. The factual basis for the article is accurate. TfL does not have a grudge against Bromley. TfL doesn't yet have any direct responsibility over rail services (though they will have some kind of responsibility soon), but they are very keen on ensuring that the railways south of the river benefit the residents of all the Boroughs more than they do at present. TfL would ideally like frequent Metro-style services running all over south London. |
