I experienced a very strange thing on Monday evening. Travelling from
Tottenham Ct Rd to Bond St, the coach I was on appeared to deform slightly as the train accelerated. I was perched on the end seats, and on acceleration my feet shifted slightly forward (I was facing backwards), it was like the floor moved relative to the rest of the coach. Accompanying this was a creaking from the walls of the coach. Now I've been on enough tube journeys to know this isn't normal, we all know each type of stock have their peculiarities and this just wasn't one of them. Before anyone asks, I did make it known to a station assistant what I'd felt and what car no. was involved. Am I being silly here? I am however curious about the type of construction (was it BREL?) used to construct these sets. A lot was made of the JLE new stock being of monocoque construction, were any older vehicles made this way? I'm just curious if anything happened (or if we'd ever know) or if anyone else had noticed anything like this. Mark. |

Mark,
I have used the District Line a lot more than any other line over the years, and what you have described is something I have certainly experienced on C stock, and quite possibly D stock as well. When standing against the bulkheads adjacent to the doors, I have certainly had the sensation of these moving relative to the floor. It's never particularly worried me - I assumed that the length of these carriages must have some "give", being made of steel. Marc. |
