In article , Geoff Marshall
writes Edgware Road (a bit like Earl's Court) has always been a nightmare to navigate. [...] Edgware Road westbound is really easy to deal with. About half way down platforms 3 and 4 are signal repeaters; it's easy enough to place yourself where both are visible. Whichever one goes green is the train that will go first. Earl's Court can be just as confusing. I've been on an Upminster - Wimbledon train that's come in on the north Westbound platform, and sat there waiting 2 minutes, and a Wimbleware train has come in on the southwide platform. I looked out the door, BOTH signals were on Green. Earl's Court to the Wimbledon branch is one of the few places where you can't play the game - there's two westbound tracks almost to West Brompton and, as the driver intimated, no clue when you're standing at EC as to who will get priority at the merge point. -- Clive D.W. Thaydon Boys. Like Chesham Bois (Chesh-um Boys) which is a place (not a tube station) near Chesham in Bucks. I think the pronunciation is a sort of inverted snobbery: "now that the plebs have realised that Bois is a French word and should be pronounced Bwah, we're going to pronounce it Boys just to catch them out"! |

Yes, but unless the trains are on both sides of the same island platform, you might have difficulty seeing both signals and reacting quickly enough when one signal turns green. This is a problem at Edgware Road if the trains in question are at platforms 2 and 4. Is it the signal which decides when the train will leave or the driver? The signal indicates which train will leave first, but it's up to the driver how quickly he reacts to it. For example, if the train arrived at the terminus late or there is a crew change, the driver might not be ready to depart when the signal turns green. Only in very exceptional circumstances will the green signal revert to red to enable another train to leave first, and in that case there is always a 2-minute delay before another signal is set to green. -- Richard J.
