Why the hell don't they just use a speech synthesiser?? WHy bother having all
this pre-recorded rubbish that costs a fortune and has to be re-recorded
if they need a new announcement? If a synthesiser is good enough for Stephen
Hawking to give lectures about quantum physics and cosmology at Cambridge I'm
damn sure its good enough for announcements in a tube train!

Because if they did, people like you would complain about "these damned
synthesised voices, why can't they emply a person to do the job".

Tube announcements have to be heard and understand by lots of people
with differing levels of English speaking ability and in different
levels of noise. Speech synthesisers could be harder to understand than
a good, clearly spoken announcement by a real person.

I personally have a condition that can cause me trouble hearing things
in loud situations (or even quiet ones) and I'm always well able to
hear the announcements on the tube, so I'm glad they've been done the
way they are.
