On Classic FM (during a film music programme) the presenter alleged this
film was made on the Tallyllyn Railway. Clearly that is wrong as it was standard gauge, but where was it filmed? Anyone know? Regards, MaxB |

On Classic FM (during a film music programme) the presenter alleged this film [The Titfield Thunderbolt] was made on the Tallyllyn Railway. Clearly that is wrong... The truth is that the author was *inspired to write* the movie after visiting the Talyllyn Railway and seeing the enthusiasm of the railfans running it. as it was standard gauge, but where was it filmed? Anyone know? On the then recently closed ex-GWR branch from Limpley Stoke to Camerton, in Somerset. The main-line scene is at Bristol. Martin Underwood:
Some scenes were shot elsewhe .... - the replacement loco (the Titfield Thunderbolt) was stolen from the Science Museum in Kensington That is, the scene of it being removed from the museum was filmed there. The locomotive itself was "Lion", built in 1838, and was borrowed from the Liverpool Engineering Society museum. It was taken by road to Westbury for overhaul, and continued to the filming locations under its own power. -- Mark Brader "Actually, $150, to an educational institution, Toronto turns out to be about the same as a lower amount." -- Mark Horton |

Titfield station was Monkton Coombe station which, as far as I can tell, is/was at the junction of Mill Lane in Monkton Coombe (alongside the private school) and the road from Limpley Stoke that goes along the old trackbed.
