Does this therefore leave Edinburgh's Lothian Buses as the "centre of
excellence" as far as "proper" intermediate point displays are
concerned or are there still a fair few other provincial operators who
continue with them?

TWM isn't too bad in this respect. Most buses show an intermediate and
one "via", usually on separate blinds. This system was inherited by
the old WMPTE from Midland Red in the early seventies and is pretty
good.
