I'm thinking of going to Guildford from Surbiton tomorrow on the train with
my bike. Cycle down to Brighton and get a train back. Is it cheaper for two singles or straight return from Brighton? I will be using a network railcard. Thanks |

They take credit cards easily. I was about to say "easier than the staff", but that's not true. Less grumpy maybe, but not easier. Anyway. It seems £10.75 return is better value. But can I buy a ticket at this time of night for "today"? I'm pretty sure that if I bought a ticket at 00.30, that only applies till daybreak. I may be wrong, but I'm not risking it. Why can't the machines allow me to buy a future ticket? |

Why can't the machines allow me to buy a future ticket? Which machines were they using? The Shere Fastticket machines at Cambridge, now operated by 'one' but installed by WAGN, offer a choice of today or tomorrow for sales after some time each afternoon. The Southern self-service ticket machines - also a Shere model - sell tickets for the next day after 4pm. A very useful facility. Didn't seem to at 12.30 last night. Maybe it resets at midnight. I just didn't trust that "today" meant "not tonight". i.e. they may have said "the ticket is only valid to 4am" or something. |

The traffic day starts at midnight and continues to 02.30 the next day [1] to deal with trains that start their journeys before midnight. [1] well it certainly did when I was involved in ticketing. Things may have changed but a railway day is longer than 24 hours for good reason. -- Paul C Admits to working for London Underground! |
