Default Steam between North Woolwich and Custom House...

Plans have been announced for a new heritage steam service in East
London, to connect with the North Woolwich Old Station Museum. The plan
provides a steam service on the North London Line between North
Woolwich and Custom House, which could be running by 2009. Full story
next issue.

A nice idea, but it seems a shame to plan a steam service - as the
line is 3rd rail equipped, it would provide a rare opportunity to set
up a heritage Southern electric operation.

The plan is that both steam and electric trains will operate. However,
the heritage line will cease to function when (if) Crossrail comes into
being as it will need the line and the North Woolwich Station site.

Since the DLR is going to take over the line from Straford surely that
means that the line to Woolwich will become isolated from the rest
of the network so how will they power the 3rd rail? Is there a
substation
on that short stretch? Also , are there any easy places to load stock
onto the rails from a lorry alongside that bit of the line?

I'm sure that the stock in the museum part of North Woolwich station has
come in by road.
