[Copy of a letter I've just written to Underground News.]
On 1st September 1939 the Northern Line Charing Cross branch was closed from Strand to Kennington to allow floodgates to be installed in the tunnels, and on the 7th the Bank branch was closed from Moorgate to London Bridge for the same reason. Around the same time, some 19 stations closed to allow floodgates to be installed in the various passageways. "Rails through the Clay" says that this happened on 1st September, but in his book on the Northern Line, Mike Horne reproduces a poster showing the closure date as the 7th. There are other anomalies: the poster shows Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road open for interchange, with only the street entrances being blocked, but Mike adds King's Cross to that in his text. The poster also talks about access to Central Line trains at Bank, but RttC gives a re-opening date for the Central Line at Bank. Can anyone resolve these discrepancies for me, please? Finally, are the dates above the last day of service or the first day of no service? -- Clive D.W.
