As I can see the first of the new platforms wasn't finished in time.
Any idea when it will finally open?

Has anyone got any pictures of the works - I've only seen brief
glimpses of the new structure

Well - it seems there aren't many photos, so I took some myself - you
can't see much - from inside the main building your view is relaly
just of a jumble of scafolding, and from the track you can see that no
rails have yet been connected from the main track to the new
platforms. See here for mo

Snap - I've taken a few photos too, most of them from the same angles
as yours, but I didn't take any shots from the DLR train as you did.
Anyhow I don't think utl-ers need to see a slightly less good set of
near-duplicate photos so I won't bother uploading them (not that I
could do so anyway at the mo as I can't find the damn cable to enable
me to transfer them to my computer!).

A few weeks back when on a long cycle ride I went and poked around
Gibbins Road where the new side entrance to Stratford station will be
- it's quite a quiet residential area, mostly low rise small houses
with a high rise tower as well, quite a contrast to the hustle and
bustle of the main entrance to Stratford. I wonder how much the new
entrance will change this ambiance.

It's also where the computer fair takes place on Saturdays and Sundays.
Should make that much easier to get to.

OK - I don't know anything about the computer fair - is it any good?
Where exactly is it held?

There is also some weird church occupying one of the disused
buildings :-S
You can hear them chanting in the evenings (even from the station)

In the Carpenters and Docklands Centre in Gibbins Road. Starts 10:30
Sat and Sun. They claim, or at least used to, that it's the largest
computer fair in London.

Is it any good? I don't know how to measure goodness.

Possibly none at all - according to the website drawing it is only 'passive
provision' for a second entrance to the station...

There are bizarre religious gatherings that happen all over London,
it's all part of the show! I used to live on a road where what
appeared to be a seance was held, by candlelight in the front room
visible to all passers on the street. Nowadays I'm entertained by a
lady who, on sundays (presumably en route to and from church but who
am I to presume such things) gets on my local bus and sings a few
hymns before grasping my hand and 'blessing' me with love. She's
great! Meanwhile there's a young guy who I've encountered whilst
perambulating who paces up and down under a bridge and sings Ghanaian
gospel tunes. Indeed I've seen many intriguing things that are far
odder.

All that said, incessant chanting can sound a bit weird. I shall
listen out for it if I'm in Stratford late in the evening some day.

This is veering wildly off-topic, so I'll stop now

Thanks. I'm not a connoiseur of computer fairs but if I was to want to
attend one in the future then perhaps the biggest in Europe isn't a
bad start. Anyway it's always useful to have such titbits of London
knowledge.

I like that, an exquisitely noncommital answer!
