They travel on scheduled trains these days, as well as scheduled airlines. But not on tube trains or buses. Much easier to segregate them at airports and main line stations. So we agree that they do use public transport, just not all varieties. Not really, special arrangements are made, they get platform and lounge space for themselves, the first class coach or section of cabin is for their use only. That can hardly be sensibly referred to as using public transport in the sense that everyone else does. Graeme, do stop wriggling. It's not becoming. It used to be possible for anyone with the necessary cash, to hire an engine with a coach or two for a private journey, but I guess thats no longer the case, as virtually none of the comic "railway" companies now have any engines, apart from EWS, and coaches are getting as rare as hens' teeth, especially on Last Great Worsen for journeys from Bath to Bristol......! |

I've heard plenty of good stuff about London on Robert Elms' show when I've tuned in, but the stories about secret Underground railways that featured on this particular show was not good stuff, it was all a load of cobblers! There are undoubtedly some quasi-secret tunnels and installations in London - for example the "Q-Whitehall" facility and "PINDAR" [1] - and there are quite possibly a number of others - but there's no secret Underground railway lines! More about the aforementioned underground installations on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_citadels_under_London If you want to read about a Metro system that quite possibly does have a secret line, as well as a supposed dual-purpose so it serves as a link between military facilities, take a look at this unofficial site about the Pyongyang Metro: http://www.pyongyang-metro.com/index.html Dear God,152 messages! at least on google....? The pyongyang metro link IS interesting. Heapey near chorley? I dont think the Box tunnel thread that I instigated did this well hehe! |

Hasn't the Moscow Metro got a few "unadvertised" sidings in the vicinity of various government buildings ? Moscow has a 4-line secret metro, longer than the public Metro.... allegedly. I wouldn't be surprised if the stations are more ornate too! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moscow_Metro_2 |

IIRC Whirlybirds was late 50s and the machines used were Bell 47G 2 seaters (includes pilot, paint first before assembly). Similar machine to the Sioux used in MASH. I remember "Whirlybirds", the copter looked like a bubble with a tail made of girder type structure. That's the one! Main characters were Chuck Martin and PT Moore, ISTR, though who played them I can't recall. :-\ -- Brian |

Nifty conspiracy theory, or fact? Well, Brian I have to say many thanks for livening up this news group !! Pete To which newsgroup do you refer - as he copied his post to three, as I think have all (or at least most) of the other contributors. I only copied them to ngs where the question was on-topic. Thought we'd get immediate thread drift if I included a royal family group. -- Brian |

If it was a dirty biological bomb in London, and a riot amongst the populace who were being prevented from leaving for fear of infecting the rest of the country, it could well be the best of the three options. The purple powder incident in the Westminster parliament demonstrated the difference between plans and reality. The bods should have been kept in the chamber to prevent potential contamination of others, but they left. Indeed. Such places may be fondly thought of as some fantastic place out of a film. However, the reality in the UK was generally of secondhand buildings with not enough money spent on them. Anyone can, and the NRT (page 2651) even hints at how to go about it. It suggests ten to fourteen weeks notice, whereas in Victorai times you could approach the stationmaster, at least at a main station, and you'd be on your way in your special train within the hour. David Jackson wrote: The message from Graeme Wall contains these words: Even now certain people can have a special train run for them if they pay the appropriate charge. BTDT - at no extra charge! Not recently though, about 1976 IIRC. We were taking a party of 20 students to the Lakes. Change at Lancaster. When the Barrow train rolled in to the platform it was wedged and the guard told us not to even try to get on, but there was a relief train behind, and he would get the connection on to Ravenglass held for us at Barrow. He was right about the relief, but he forgot about the connection at Barrow, and when we got there the station was deserted. The driver who brought us from Lancaster had a word with his guard, who knew our story, went into an office, came back a few minutes later and told us to get back on the train. We arrived in Ravenglass in plenty of time to make our connection onto La'al Ratty. Now that's service for you. -- Graeme Wall This address is not read, substitute trains for rail.
